So this morning after waking I was reading my Bible and ran across this Story of the “The Widow’s Two Mites” from the book of Mark:

Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury;for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.” – Mark 12:41-44

Now I’m sure many of you have heard of this story, but this morning I got a very different picture of its meaning. This story speaks of people coming and giving their tithes offerings, which is something we all need to do, we are called to give God our “first fruits.” I highly recommend you read “The Richest Man in Babylon“, for this book further explains the spiritual principle which leads to financial abundance. However this morning when I read this story I get the impression that this is saying we are called to give God EVERY BIT OF OURSELVES. Our whole livelihood!

What do I mean you ask? We need to view our day-to-day lives in a way that we can be in continual praise and worship to our Creator. Our jobs, our daily routines and errands, how we interact with our family, friends, coworkers and strangers; all of these things can be done in such a way that is Glorifies God.

I think of the movie The Last Samurai and how Tom Cruise’s character is so inspired by how the Samurai take extreme care to do every menial task day-to-day with such precision and to do everything in excellence. This Glorifies God. We must all BECOME A PERSON OF EXCELLENCE.

If we develop the habit of doing more than we are paid for, if we treat people with more kindness and love than they necessarily deserve, if we become someone who gives more service, love and compassion to others than they are willing to give back to you. Simply put if we GIVE IT ALL and do so without expectation, I believe we are greatly pleasing God.

We are called not to give God the overflow or the leftovers, we are called to give God EVERYTHING WE’VE GOT. The Creator of the Universe created each and every one of us with extreme care and precision. If you just stop for a second and think of any specific detail and or function of how our bodies operate, this becomes glaringly obvious. From our hearts and lungs operating without us needing to think about it, to how we can cut ourselves and our skin will grow back together, to something as awe-inspiring as how our eyes or ears work and on and on. WE ARE MAGNIFICENT CREATIONS!

I’ve heard it said many of times that God’s gift to us is life, and what we do with it is our gift to God. Well it’s the little things that count, yes you could go to Church every Sunday, you could do mission trips, hours of volunteer and humanitarian work, you could lift up your family with positivity day in and day out, but what about the days you are stressed out and tired? What about when you just don’t feel like it and you shirk at an opportunity to be loving and kind to the Barista at Starbucks, or you scoff at a homeless person that asks you for change in the street? What about the days you show up late to work, goof off on personal phone calls and surfing the web and then jet out early so you can get home and watch your favorite TV show you have recorded? It’s the times when we don’t want to give or we feel like we have nothing to give and we do it anyways; we give it all we’ve got, that get’s God’s attention and opens the doors for blessings and favor.

In this story Jesus was the most impressed with the lady because she gave everything she had, and in similar fashion God asks us to lay it all on the line. When our time on this earth has passed and we get to look at our Creator face to face, we need to be able to say that we gave it everything we had. If we put it all on the line and live our lives fully expressed, doing the best we can, in all the ways that we can, at every moment we can, not only will we live with extreme satisfaction and fulfillment knowing we did our best, but I believe our Heavenly Father will be extremely pleased with us for leaving all our cards on the table.

Today I challenge you to live a life of Excellence and don’t focus on the things you can’t do but the things you can. I challenge you to take extreme pride and care with everything you do in your life and constantly ask yourself, am I living in such a way that my actions at this precise moment would be pleasing to God? I believe with all my heart and soul that if you can live in such a way that your answer to that question is “yes” more often than it is “no” your life will explode into a whole new realm of happiness, joy, success and fulfillment than you have ever experienced. Expect Excellence out of yourself today!

God Bless you All,

Thank you Melissa! I’m glad you enjoyed! That’s one of my favorite things about reading the Bible is that every time you read it you get more and more from it!

I love the message here Jason and I think it’s so important that we remember to give our “first fruits” and not our “leftovers” because God never gives us leftovers!! I agree with Melissa that this story is very eye opening. We could all always do more and give more but realizing that is key!!!

This is my first interaction i have ever done ever. I liked the new vision that this blog has informed me. The idea that We shall influence people in our lives in some kind of way such as greeting someone while you are at work or walking down the sidewalk. That one person you do not know or speak to every day could be having a terrible day. Saying hey how are you? Or just hello could inpact someones life even if their response to you was an evil look or disgusted look. In retail we all dispise retail and in occasions or all the time we get customers who are rude or just plain mean. It is our job to say hey how are you in a positive way even if we dont mean it at the time why should we show that we dont mean it to the customer. Its not a lie its a priority that we are givin to express to others. A person who is having a bad day may not appreciate it but realize the next time he came in or someone else said hi to him he will remember someone at a previous time that he knew he was rude to. It changed his life or perhaps his view on life even if it wasnt right away. I hope i made sense and doesnt sound like i am rambling. Thank you!

Thanks for the comment Brandon! It makes perfect sense! How funny is it that we have to be trained in a retail job setting or that kind of environment to be kind and friendly to people at all times even when they don’t “deserve” it. I there is a valuable lesson to be learned from that; we should all teach each other to treat each other in the same way, in retail they are expressing the importance that the image they portray and will result in increased business and customer retention, yet in life when there is no ulterior motive imagine what a positive impact we can all make!!! Great insight Brandon!!
