The Philosophy of Truth? What does that mean exactly, you might be asking. When I was  in college philosophy was one of my favorite classes, and throughout my adult life I have always enjoyed reading the different philosophers and even considered myself a bit of one at times. However interestingly enough it wasn’t until recently that I actually learned the meaning of the word. The word “philosophy” comes from the Greek word “philosophia” which literally means “the love of wisdom.” In the incredible age we live in we find ourselves and much of our society completely infatuated with “wisdom” or knowledge and information, however does this necessarily mean we are interested in TRUTH? I don’t think so.

I found an interesting quote by Marcus Aurelius that said:

“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not a TRUTH.”

You see, the western world we live in is still very much living in a mindset or a paradigm that originated in Greek times when the first and most famous philosophers emerged. I can even quote Wikipedia as saying “Greek philosophy has influenced much of Western thought since its inception.” Well what does that mean for us today? It means that western culture as a whole lives in a paradigm of questioning everything, always being hungry for the newest ideas, the newest breakthroughs or even sometimes naively the newest “truths.” The world attempts to intellectualize everything, and the general mindset is “I have to see it to believe it.” We live in a society where there must be a logical explanation for everything. But remember the quote from Marcus Aurelius above, what we HEAR is only an OPINION, what we SEE is only a PERSPECTIVE. Now, what we hear can seem very factual depending on who or where it’s coming from, and what we see can seem very truthful because of the perspective it’s coming from if it’s our own; yet the opinions the world gives us and the perspectives we view them from do not make them facts and do not make them truths.

You see, truths are ancient and facts exist regardless of our awareness to them. Gravity is a fact, or a truth or a law, and even if you aren’t aware of it, if you attempt to walk off the edge of a tall building you will feel and experience the effect of that truth. There aren’t numerous truths out there, there is ONE truth. As Jim Rohn said “you have to be wary of someone who says they are manufacturing antiques.” This is what is the world is doing. The world is churning out new ideas and new ‘knowledge’ and ‘wisdom’ like no other, you know why? Because much of the world finds the TRUTH offensive. The TRUTH often requires us to CHANGE, requires us to GROW, requires us to START doing certain things and STOP doing other things.

The problems and evils of the world can be traced back to a single choice and single decision made thousands of years ago in the Garden of Eden. If you read the account in Genesis 2 you will see that there were 2 trees mentioned in Garden, the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God told Adam that he could eat freely of EVERY tree EXCEPT the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, for if he ate of it he would surely die. Shortly after Adam’s partner, Eve, was made the serpent showed up and pulled the same trick on her that has been keeping countless people from experiencing God’s Blessings today. The serpent got Eve to focus on what she was told she COULDN’T do, instead of everything that she COULD do.

So what does this mean for us today in our struggle for ‘wisdom’ vs TRUTH? You see, the world has accomplished unbelievable things and achievements feeding off the Tree of Knowledge, yet as a whole the world is failing. We have scientific achievements and breakthroughs in virtually every area you can imagine, yet in our world more people die from HUNGER every year than from Aids, malaria and tuberculosis COMBINED. There are people who have created unimaginable wealth, more than could ever be spent in 100 lifetimes, yet approximately 80% of the world’s population still lives on less than $10 a DAY! You see the breakdown is that most of the world LOVES knowledge, but denies TRUTH. The world clings to the Tree of Knowledge and turns away from the Tree of Life. The world attempts to intellectualize things of a spiritual nature, which is why the world does not have the POWER and the LIFE that only comes from God Himself!

The Western world, especially in its Greek philosophical mindset, chooses the path of least resistance and attempts to explain all the issues of the world that stem from spiritual issues, without addressing or even acknowledging that we live in a spiritual world. It is a FACT that when a human dies, their body gets lighter! When the spirit and soul LEAVES the body, there is a measurable difference in the weight! You’ve heard many new age spiritual teachers say things like “we are not physical beings that have a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings that are here temporarily having a human experience.” What is needed is this: we need to learn not to love knowledge, but to love GOD! We need to choose to eat from the Tree of Life by feasting on things of the Spirit and not continuing to attempt to gain sustenance from the Tree of Knowledge, because that only leads to death and destruction. There is no point in having amazing technology, huge houses, or millions of dollars if we destroy the planet, kill each other, and allow our governments to drive our economy into the ground by abandoning the spiritual truths of the Holy Bible that built the Nation we live in like it is doing now. Winston Churchill said:

“The TRUTH is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.”

St. Augustine, said:

“The TRUTH is like a lion. You don’t have to defend it, let it loose and it will defend itself.”

You see there is only ONE ultimate Truth. His name is Jesus Christ. As He said in John 14:6

“I am the way, the TRUTH and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.”

No medical achievements, modern medicine or any scientific breakthrough has EVER raised someone from the dead after a few days! Nothing that was created from the Tree of Knowledge has ever done anything like the countless miracles you can read about it the Bible like instantly healing diseases, restoring hearing and sight to the deaf and blind, turning water into wine, multiplying a few fish and loaves a bread to feed thousands of people; but for the Creator of the Universe, it’s as easy as pie.

Jesus spoke many times about being like little children, and this is what we must always remember. We must have FAITH like a child, and realize that anything is possible, when we believe. We must seek experiential knowledge, and not just accept everything we read or hear as truth. We must abandon what we think we ‘know’ by remembering the words of Marcus Aurelius above: “Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not a TRUTH.”

Does your current perspective make that old childhood friend you run into in an airport a mere ‘coincidence’ or is it a divine appointment?  Is that unexpected check in your mailbox when you desperately needed it a random yet timely occurrence or a rather, a miraculously answered prayer? Is the loved one pulling through an unexpected health scare just an amazing testament to modern medicine or in fact, the work of God’s hand?

Your PERSPECTIVE is your REALITY. Yet only one of these perspectives was born from the Tree of Life and is rooted in the TRUTH of the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY. Jesus is THE Truth and only the things of God have lasting power and the ability to bring the change our world desperately needs. When you completely SURRENDER to God and put your trust in Him, GRATITUDE and HUMILITY are two of the first things that arise. Amazingly enough these are two of the most important requirements to become a leader in any field or endeavor and to lead a happy and successful life. Put your Trust in the LORD today, become a lover of GOD not a lover of wisdom. The world will never fully satisfy the desires you have inside, because you were not created for this world.

“The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” – Isaiah 58:11

Amazing post. I’ve learned that sometimes the only logical explanation is that there isn’t one, especially when seeing Gods miracles! I love the quote by Aurelius I’ve never hear it before but it makes complete sense.
