Ringing through my mind are the words from the Nike Commercial I posted in one of my first entries on this blog “Step Up to Your Greatness”. In the commercial it said that Greatness isn’t in one special place, and it isn’t in one special person. Greatness is wherever somebody is trying to find it.  I believe that inside each and every one of us is something amazing, something beautiful and something that we owe to the world. A gift, a talent and special skill. A love, a passion, a dream or a goal that we long for, that keeps us up at night or at least has at one point in our lives. Do you have a talent or a gift inside that you are hiding from the world? Are you perhaps even hiding it from yourself?

What is it that you do exceptionally well? What would you be, do or have if you had an unlimited amount of money and knew with absolute certainty that it was completely impossible to fail? I might not know each and every one of you reading this personally, but I’m sure you have something absolutely amazing about you that could, would and should inspire the rest of us in some way. The thing we all have to ask ourselves is are we truly happy? Are we doing what brings us the most joy and fulfillment or are we convincing ourselves that conforming to the world and doing what most everyone else is doing is satisfying our soul? Is it crazy to think that we could build a life and build a career doing exactly what we love to do? Is it unrealistic to think that each and every one of us could really create a life that exemplifies what Mark Twain so eloquently stated? “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life” I know there are many amazing people in the world doing just that but I believe the majority of us do not live that courageously.

It takes courage to be different, and it takes self-confidence and some complete audacity to be the amazing, unique and beautiful creation that is you with complete authenticity. So many people get caught up trying to look like everyone else looks, drive what everyone else drives, and do what everyone else does that many people completely lose sight of who they really are and what makes them so unique and special to begin with. Maybe you are the type of individual that recognized your gift or your talent or your passion at a very early age and have spent years and years honing your craft and perfecting your skill. On the other hand you could be someone who hasn’t stopped trying to keep up with the Joneses long enough to really stop and think about what is really important to you, where your gifts truly lie and what will bring you the most joy and fulfillment. Or even worse yet you could be the person who found your true dream and passion and gift, pursued it with all your heart and then let fear take it away from you, perhaps by the help of a Dream-stealer. One of those seemingly well-meaning individuals who out of their own fear of you outshining them or a misguided but genuine desire to attempt to protect you from heartache or failure talks you out of your pursuit of happiness.

Whichever category we find ourselves fitting into, and wherever we are at this stage in our lives we must all put our foot down and just say no to FEAR. Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of being ridiculed, fear of criticism, or one of the other 8 million ways fear can manifest itself in our lives and stop us from Stepping up to the Greatness we are intended to experience ourselves as. I’m not a reality TV watcher and I can’t say as I’ve ever watched an episode of America’s Got Talent, but I came across this clip the other day and it moved me and filled me with such emotion it was overwhelming and I got inspired to write on this topic. This is a perfect example of allowing our own negative thinking to make us feel separate from others and uncomfortable in our own skin, so uncomfortable that we become so paralyzed by fear to share the one part of ourselves that brings us the most joy and could and would radically transform everything about how we experience the world and our relationships with others. Let the walls come down, do what makes you happy, share your gift with the world, and don’t let anyone talk to you out of it. You all have something beautiful inside of you, and the rest of us are all waiting for you to share it with us so we can be inspired. Enjoy the Clip!

That clip was so touching and brought tears to my eyes! It always amazes me to see some people hold back their greatness because they are more worried at how people will criticize them after they show what there true talents are. Can you imagine how damaging to the soul it can be to hold back, because of fear, what your God given talents are. Great post and thank you for your words of wisdom!

Who beat down the spirit of that young man? WE all did; because we’ve all judged a person by their looks….shame on us! Wow, I hope everyone who watches that remembers compassion and tolerance when they see someone that looks different. Thank you Andrew for stepping outside of your comfort zone, grabbing an ounce of courage and living out your dream. Great post!
